The first is through the vehicle’s lighter socket. Installation couldn’t be easier: just plug and play to capture footage whilst driving. Despite this you won’t be able to use parking mode as the camera powers down when the ignition is turned off in most vehicles (This is so you don’t drain the car battery).

The second is by hard wiring to the vehicle power supply. These cameras detect when the ignition is switched off and enter into parking mode. This can include motion detection as well as impact detection of events, time lapse photography and economy mode. You don’t have to be worried about draining the car battery as you can set a voltage cut off and variable timer on the camera.

The third is via an OBD port power cable, which behaves like the hard wire installation without the need to connect to the vehicle’s fuse box.

Lastly cameras can also benefit from the use of an iVolt battery, which uses the same cells as electric cars. Cameras connected to an iVolt behave like a hard wire installation.
